The Arts

Chorus- Chorus is a performance based class in which students learn sight singing and music reading skills while performing pieces from various genres to expand their musical repertoire.  This class is taken daily for the entire year and offers knowledge that covers historical and cultural influence.

General Music- General Music is best described as Music Appreciation.  In this course, students study composers, instruments, Music Theater, ballet, and music theory among other subjects.  Students are engaged in creative tasks that involve writing musical rhythms, excerpts and analyzing chords.  They study both classic and modern musicians/composers and are given a cross curricular experience that strengthens math skills, social studies skills, and writing skills.

Orchestra-  Sixth, Seventh and Eighth Grade
Students in Orchestra study the violin, viola, cello or bass.  No previous experience is needed to become a member of the Sixth Grade Orchestra.  Students study technique and music theory as they develop skills which will allow them to participate in the Hickory High School Orchestra as well as continue to play in the community past graduation.  Many members continue to perform in college and beyond. The Orchestra performs four to six concerts yearly with additional community and school performances.

Art- Classes are offered to 6th, 7th, & 8th grade students.
